I was thinking that I need a sponsor. Someone to shell out, mmm, I dunno say a million bucks so that they can have exclusive use of the shannonsays.com name. Surely I am a better bet than sponsoring a sportsman or sports team.
As new allegations of the misadventures of sportspeople continue to emerge, there are more than a few sponsors who are attempting to distance themselves from the stars and clubs they once jostled to throw cash at.
Poor Carlton hasn’t currently got a home match sponsor, and given that it has emerged that their players like popping the odd party drug, Toshiba are probably questioning their involvement as their away game sponsor as well.. Maybe Toshiba could throw their cash my way. I could be Toshiba’s shannonsays.com.
What about Mortgage Choice, they must be wondering whether being associated with alleged rapists at StKilda is worth it…
In the wake of continuing scandals, disgraced NRL club Canterbury has watched a few sponsors pull their funding faster than their fans pull their fists; Bing Lee Discounts, BlueScope Lysagt and Perfection Fresh Markets have all walked.
It seems that these companies have been reminded of one of the pitfalls of being associated with sports people and teams. Whether some of the current allegations are true or not is irrelevant, the back page spreads and lengthy police investigations that such scandals involve turns these sponsorships into venom. Not only that, but they lug the whole image and appeal of the sporting codes down with them.
I wont knock on Cadbury Schweppes’ door just yet though. They want to sponsor the Brisbane Lions, but the AFL doesn’t want to let them because they want to protect Coke. Yeah, like Coke need protecting….
Whatever happens, as soon as I get a sponsor, I am going to leverage the association with some of these!
